According to global statistical indicators, the vast majority (70%) of Digital Transformation projects end in low quality and partial success, and a third in complete failure. How to achieve high quality and complete success of a Digital Transformation project? In our experience, this can be achieved as follows:
Instead of quality preparation as previously stated, companies perform the preparation themselves and without the participation of Business Architects. Process workers and business managers are required to prepare the Digital Transformation.
Since the employees in the process as well as the managers are not trained for these tasks, the result is a low-quality preparation. Such preparation has several main disadvantages:
The low quality of requirements preparation makes it impossible to achieve a quality business transformation, in a line with defined goals and business strategy.
While project lead by insufficiently competent managers, results in extended project deadlines and with increased costs often well above planned. The success is usually partial, but sometimes the project is interrupted without successful completion.
To prepare a project for building, companies always hire architects, in an architectural office, but in the case of Digital Transformation, they very rarely hire Business Architects or the company specializing in the design and management of Digital Transformation projects.
As the name suggests, Business Architects are people who design businesses, analogous to architects who design buildings.
Business Architects have a thorough knowledge of: business design theories (TOGAF), business model design notation (ArchiMate), business analysis theory (BABOK) and project management (ICB, PMBOK).
In addition to theoretical knowledge, Business Architects also have the skills to use software applications (tools) for business design in accordance with TOGAF and ArchiMate standards.
In addition to the aforementioned knowledge and skills, Business Architects should also have experience gained in the implementation of complex projects.
Experience is a necessary prerequisite for recognizing and overcoming all the risks that arise during the implementation of the project and that could jeopardize the success or even lead to the complete failure of the project.
Business Architects, in cooperation with the company’s management, define or verify the company’s strategy and goals and propose initiatives to change (transform) the business.
They model the initiative, define the roles of stakeholders, create requirements and principles, as well as the implementation strategy and goals of the initiative.
Business Architects, in cooperation with business managers, perform business analysis and, in accordance with the defined initiative, design new or change current business models.
Models designed in this way will enable the achievement of high-quality business transformation and enable the company to operate efficiently and successfully.
Project management knowledge and experience enable Business Architects to manage projects that always end with complete success, on time and without increasing the planned funds.
Due to the high risk of failure of business transformation projects, we recommend to hire a company that has qualified Business Architects. They will do quality preparation and then lead the project to complete success.
